The voice.

Four rules I keep coming back to when I'm at the page.

Rule 01

Lead with the loud line.

The first sentence has to earn the second one. No throat-clearing.

Rule 02

Cut the qualifier.

“Quite”, “very”, “rather”. The strong word is sitting underneath — pull it up.

Rule 03

Use the right specific.

A name, a number, a brand. The reader trusts specifics; abstractions evaporate.

Rule 04

Land on something that hurts.

Or makes them laugh. Or change their mind. Anything but flat.
